“Thre3” is a book which demonstrates mental illness in a type of ‘worst case scenario’ way. A young man narrates the story, describing past and present events of his life. Through different character viewpoints it first appears that there are three different people telling the story, when in fact it is three parts of the man’s mind; three personalities. At first, the story consists of mostly memories, but as it goes on it explains more about the present, and explores how the man deals with what is going on around him as he uncovers more of his own dark secrets. The authors took aspects of different mental illnesses and created a mix of the more extreme symptoms, to give their characters the darker edge that they required. It’s a very complex idea, but it works because of the distressing events that the man describes. In “Thre3” the reader never finds out exactly why the young man is the way he is or why he does what he does, but it is assumed that it is all a consequence of everything that happened to him in the past. At the end of the book there’s a section stating facts about mental illness, and how it ties in with what is described in the story, as well as a couple of brief case studies of people living with mental illnesses. Putting this section in the book not only helps to explain how and why the authors portrayed mental illness in the way that they did, but also to show that people with mental illness are (mostly) not as dark and crazy as the characters that have been created. "Thre3" was written as a college media project by Kat Castle, Ami Jenkins and Matt Ripper (aged 17-18). Availability: "Thre3" is available exclusively via Print-On-Demand at Lulu.com
