Thomas E. Locke

Thomas Edward Locke, known as Tom E. Locke (March 22, 1930—March 4, 2009), was a prominent banker and civic leader in Lubbock, Texas. His 54-year banking career began with Lubbock National Bank. He was later the president and vice chairman of Texas Commerce Bank. His last position was with PlainsCapital Bank, from which he retired in 2005 though he remained until his death with PlainsCapital Asset Management as a consultant and board member.
Locke was born to the late Bill Locke and Mary Louise C. Locke (1907-1998) in Bonham, the seat of Fannin County in north Texas. He graduated in 1948 from Bonham High School, where he developed an intense interest in athletics. He enrolled for two years at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and was poised to play professional baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers. His college career was soon interrupted by service in the United States Air Force. He attended the Yale University Institute of Far East Languages and was named a communications officer and interpreter on bombers during the Korean War. After the war, he continued his studies at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, from which he graduated in 1955. In 1976, Locke completed the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
