Thomas DeMark

Thomas R. DeMark (born 1947) is the president and founder of Market Studies LLC and an American author, known worldwide for his proprietary "market timing" models and techniques. DeMark has authored three best-selling books on timing securities' markets. His unique analytical indicators are available on various financial and data networks including Bloomberg, CQG, Thomson Reuters, and Market Studies (DeMark Prime).
Career
DeMark received his B.A. and MBA in Wisconsin and attended law school there as well from 1965 through 1972. His career began as an analyst at NN Investment Services, a subsidiary of Northwestern National Insurance, in January 1972. In 1978 he became President of National Investment Services (NISA) subsidiary Financial Markets Consulting. In 1982 he formed his own consulting company and among his clients were Goldman Sachs, Illinois State Board, JP Morgan, Citicorp, Steinhardt Partners, George Soros, Security Savings, and Laurence Tisch, BEA Associates, Hoisington Investment, MacKay Shield, Dean Witter, among many other investment companies and market titans.
Fund Management
In 1988 DeMark joined Tudor as executive vice president, leaving in 1990 to join as partner with trading legend Charlie DiFrancesca, the largest floor trader at the Chicago Board of Trade. DiFrancesca passed away shortly afterward and DeMark formed a commodity fund with Van Hoisington, a highly regarded fixed income manager, however the Virginia Investment Board voted to withdraw monies from commodity investments.
Advisor
DeMark then served as an advisor to Omega Advisors, a company founded by Leon G. Cooperman, former Goldman Sachs strategist, for 2 years, and since 1995 DeMark has been special advisor to Steve A. Cohen, president of SAC Capital, a multi-billion dollar hedge fund.
Publisher, Author and Speaker
In the early eighties, DeMark founded the publications Quotron Futures Charts and Fundamental Government Chart Book. DeMark was also the publisher of the #1 (rated by CTCR) futures market letter for three consecutive years.
In 1991 DeMark became chairman of LIM (Logical Information Machines). At that time, DeMark wrote his first best-selling book on market timing. Subsequently, his market timing indicators were added to CQG data service and shortly afterwards to Bloomberg. He founded Market Studies LLC in 1995, and in 2008 Steve Cohen (SAC Capital) and John Burbank (Passport Capital) became partners in Market Studies LLC.
DeMark is a frequent contributor to investment publications, a regular guest on financial networks, and a featured speaker at seminars.
Recognition
In recent years DeMark's suite of market timing indicators have become the market timing models of choice by institutional investors. The world-wide audience for these research tools and market models has increased into the tens of thousands.
They have been embraced as the global market timing source for most institutional traders and portfolio managers. His timing techniques are widely acknowledged as being the industry's standard.
Fundamentalists, economists, and market technicians rely upon these market timing models to time their market purchases and sales. Unlike traditional market approaches which are trend following, DeMark's models are designed to be trend anticipatory. His timing techniques have become the industry's standard.
Tom DeMark received the coveted honor of being Technical Analyst Magazine’s “Technical Analyst of the Year (2011)” and was also the Market Technicians Association (MTA) Keynote speaker at its annual event in 2011.
