thumb This House of Books is a community-owned independent bookstore in downtown Billings, Montana. Its stated mission is to become "a literary & cultural hub for the city." The bookstore opened on October 1, 2016. The need for such a bookstore was noted in an article in The Billings Gazette: "We are the biggest city in Montana. Our arts and music scene has exploded in the last five years or so. This House of Books will help fill that literary need in the arts community." The name of the bookstore, “This House of Books,” is a tribute to the iconic Montana author Ivan Doig and his autobiographical masterpiece, “.” Doig's widow, Carol, agreed to allow the use of the name. Corporate structure The bookstore is organized as a cooperative. Like other corporations, it seeks to earn a profit, but the profits are then shared to the members. To become a member one purchases a share of the stock. The board of the bookstore is elected by the members. Each member has one vote. A unique feature of This House of Books is the number of authors who are members. This means that it is a bookstore run by people who are deeply involved in the book business.<ref name=":0" />
