The Witcher is an upcoming fantasy television series created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich for Netflix, featuring Henry Cavill as the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. It is based on the The Witcher series of short stories and novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. Production While the Witcher stories are popular in Sapkowski's native Poland, a 2002 television adaptation failed to make an impact abroad, and it was the video game series by CD Projekt Red, culminating with 2015's critically and commercially successful The Witcher 3, that brought the franchise to the attention of an international fandom. Netflix's intention to have Lauren Schmidt Hissrich adapt the material for television, with Sean Daniel, Jason Brown, Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko as executive producers, was first reported in December 2017. Netflix intends to produce an eight-episode first season with Alik Sakharov, Alex Garcia Lopez and Charlotte Brändström as directors. Casting The English actor Henry Cavill's casting in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia was reported in September 2018. Hissrich, who had previously argued in favor of a diverse cast and said that Sapkowski's fictional world was also diverse, was subjected to online harassment and left social media. Broadcast No broadcast date has been announced. Hissrich at one time speculated on a 2020 release, but later retracted that statement.<ref name="Game Informer" />
