The Stowaway is a 2014 science fiction short film based on the classic Tom Godwin short story "The Cold Equations". It keeps the basic plot, but updates the technology and changes the dialogue. The Stowaway won the Best Sci-Fi Short Film Award at the 2015 edition of Shriekfest. Synopsis A young woman, Marilyn, has stowed away on a ship headed to a distant planet, Woden, where her brother Gerry lives. Upon being discovered, the pilot, Barton, reports her to his commander, Delhart, who recommends that he follow protocol and jettison her from the ship. Marilyn is horrified and protests this, only to learn that the ship is carrying a serum for a life threatening virus plaguing Woden and only has enough fuel to reach its destination. Her additional weight makes it impossible to reach this destination and there are no other ships in the area that could pick her up. Barton deaccelerates in order to save gas, but this only delays the inevitable choice that must be made. This gives Marilyn enough time to briefly contact her brother Gerry and to form a brief emotional connection with Barton, who reveals that he was genetically engineered to be a long distance pilot and withstand the emotional and physical needs of such a journey. Marilyn is then jettisoned from the ship, leaving Barton alone to continue the journey. Cast * Brendan Fehr as Barton * Alfred Molina as Command Delhart (voice only) * William Moseley as Gerry Cross * Emily Robinson as Marilyn
