The Six Month Rule relates to romantic, heterosexual relationships primarily in 21st century American society. It holds that in the first 6 months of dating, no woman can ask about, demand, clarify, make expectations to or attempt to define a relationship with her man. The genesis of the idea has roots in the premise that men are more commitment-phobic that women, and it is, in a sense, an unwritten rule (until now) that allowed men to operate freely in the initial stages of a relationship without pressure from the more commitment-centric female. The topic is simply "off limits" and it provides the male a certain comfort cushion while the romance is blooming.
