The Sheds

The Sheds is a play by Australian playwright James Cunningham. It premiered at the Melbourne Fringe Festival on 19 September 2013. It then toured Australia to the Adelaide Fringe Festival (17-22 February 2014) at the Bakehouse Theatre then at the Sydney Fringe Festival (17-21 September 2014). It is about a fictional Australian Football League team, the coming out of a homosexual player on the team, and is set entirely in the locker room.
Critical Reception
The official student newspaper of Monash University in Melbourne described the play, "The masculinity and testosterone-fuelled environment of the locker room is conveyed through unrestrained bouts of swearing and unashamed nudity."
The Australian Stage Whispers describe the play, "The Sheds uses raw, visceral drama to break down sexual stereotypes and dispel the homophobic myths that can persist in sport."
The Suzy Goes See review website, "The tensions between the sporting industry and the very rare occurrences of fracture in its overwhelming heteronormativity are fertile ground for exploration, and indeed an area that our society needs to examine more closely."
