A few years ago, a black cat was spotted near Ropsley. The sightings grew and grew, mostly by farmers and gamekeepers, who know what they are talking about. Several farm animals and deer have been found over the years, half eaten, even up in trees! Hopefully this article will grow with more visits from local people, or people in the know, Thanks. Please if you have any info, add it. Black Panther's? The black panther is the common name for a black (melanistic) color variant of any of several species of cat. Zoologically speaking, the term panther is synonymous with "large cat". The genus name Panthera is a taxonomic category that includes several species of felids including the lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar. However, in North America, the term panther is commonly used for the cougar (genus Puma) while in Latin America it is most often used to mean a jaguar. Elsewhere in the world it refers to the leopard. The Black panthers natural habitats Black Panthers are reported from most densely-forested areas in southwestern China, Myanmar, Assam and Nepal, from Travancore and other parts of southern India and are said to be common in Java and the southern part of the Malay Peninsula where they may be more numerous than spotted panthers. They are less common in tropical Africa, but have been reported from Ethiopia (formerly Abyssinia), from the forests of Mount Kenya and from the Aberdares. One was recorded by Peter Turnbull-Kemp in the equatorial forest of Cameroon. See Also
