The Reasoning

The Reasoning are a rock band from Cardiff, formed in August 2005 by bass guitarist Matthew Cohen. Along with Cohen, the band initially consisted of Dylan Thompson (vocals/guitar), Gareth Jones (vocals/keyboards), Lee Wright (guitars), Vinden Wylde (drums) and award-winning singer Rachel Cohen (married to Matthew Cohen, her maiden name was Rachel Jones on vocals/percussion), who previously fronted Karnataka, and has won the title of Best Female Singer in the annual Classic Rock Society awards for an unprecedented four consecutive years.
Career
The Reasoning's debut album, Awakening, was released on 26 March 2007. It was mixed by Dave Meegan who has worked with Marillion and U2. Steve Rothery of Marillion made a guest appearance with the guitar solo on "Within Cold Glass". Lead vocals are shared between the band's three vocalists, all of whom perform a section of the lead vocals on the album's title track. After the Awakening tour finished, Lee Wright left the band, to be replaced by Owain Roberts. Their first live performance with Owain was at the Cambridge Rock Festival in July 2008.
The band recently recorded their second album Dark Angel which was released on the 6th October 2008. The band toured through October and November 2008 doing their own headline shows and supporting Fish. In March 2009 The Reasoning played at the Marillion convention (having previously supported Marillion at the Colston Hall in Bristol in 2007) at Port Zelande, Holland in front of a capacity crowd of 2500.
In July 2009, The Reasoning parted ways with Gareth Jones and Vinden Wylde. On the 9th August 2009, The Reasoning played their first show, with guest musicians, at the Fish convention. The four remaining members were joined on-stage by Maria Owen on vocals/mandolin/percussion, Scott Barnett on acoustic guitar, Jonathan Freeden on keyboards and Jake Bradford-Sharp on drums. This was initially billed as an acoustic show, but because of the temporary additions to the line-up, the band played a full acoustic set as initially planned.
On 10 August 2009, The Reasoning released a cover version of The Chauffeur as an on-line digital download-only single. As of 14 August 2009, it has reached #2 on the Amazon UK rock download chart and #34 on the main Amazon UK download chart.
On 31 August 2009, two new members joined The Reasoning: Maria Owen on vocals/acoustic guitar and Jake Bradford-Sharp on drums, both of whom played with the band at the Fish convention earlier in the month. Then on 6 September, Tony Turrell (keyboards/vocals), previously of Fish fame, was added to the line-up, making them a seven-piece for the first time in the band's history. This line-up was debuted at The Globe in Cardiff on 21 November 2009 as part of their round up for the year and also as a special Christmas concert.
In April 2010 the band toured around the UK where their third album Adverse Camber was avaliable for the first time. It was released generally after the tour had finished. The band then went back into the studio to record a new album, but this one saw reworkings of previous songs done in an acoustic format. This was called Acoustically Speaking and was only avaliable at the band's live shows or direct from their website .
In July 2010, the band opened the Prog Stage on the Sunday of the first ever High Voltage Festival in London, England. This performance was filmed and the band intend to release the footage in a DVD package called Highway to High Voltage which will also contain a documentary of the making of Adverse Camber. In September, the band played a few gigs outside the UK. These shows took place in Norway and saw the band headlining a venue and also supporting the band Pagan's Mind.
In October 2010, two band members left. Maria and Dylan both left the band citing personal reasons, but the november tour went ahead as planned as a five piece. 2011 sees the band writing material for their 4th studio album, which will be released later in the year.
