The Ponsmere Hotel

The Ponsmere Hotel is a hotel situated in Ponsmere Road, Perranporth in Cornwall, in the United Kingdom.
Renowned as "The Hotel on the Beach" the Ponsmere stands tall and looks over the magnificent views of Perranporth beach.
Built in 1924, and used as a shelter for soldiers during World War Two, it has seen several expansions over the years, to be the 72 bedroom hotel that it is today, that looks over the beach.
Towards the right of the building on the lower floor, is the Sunset Bar - one of the more popular bars in Perranporth, which also serves food and is open to anyone, not just guests staying at the Hotel.
The hotel was built by the Batchelor family, and is currently managed by Peter Batchelor.
The hotel itself
The hotel itself is built upon 4 levels. The ground floor, features the reception area, dining room, indoor swimming pool and access to the lift.
Upon your arrival upstairs you are greeted by the bar, ballroom, kids club, toilets, television room, games room and then through to the Sunset Bar.
The next two levels are the bedrooms. Some with Country View, with views of the beautiful hills or Sea View where you get your own private balcony to take a look at the stunning and magnificent views.
Outside are also annexes, which add more bedrooms to the hotel - at a slightly cheaper price, too.
Outside is also an outdoor pool - used in the Summer, and open until 6pm everyday. The indoor pool is open until 9pm - both are watched by lifeguards. There is also a play area/park area for children to play in - this is not just open to guests at the hotel as it joins onto the Sunset Bar - which is not just for hotel guests.
Entertainment at the Ponsmere Hotel is brilliant. With Lorraine King and her kids club team always on hand to look after the children and Tony King - the man who sorts out the entertainment. A top man - he is always found behind his booth welcoming acts onto the stage, or doing Bingo or giving his quizzes out. With wife Lorraine, they make a great team and help make the Ponsmere what it is. The time and effort that they put into everything from Beach BBQs, to Rambling to pubs each Wednesday or organising a duck race for the kiddies - they really are a fantastic couple and the place wouldn't be the same without them!
The Ponsmere County Music Festival
The Ponsmere Country Music Festival is a festival held every October at the Ponsmere Hotel. In 2009, it celebrated its 20th Anniversary and is now taking bookings for its 21st festival taking place in October 2010.
The festival has been run by Barrie Smalley, and his wife Pat since the beginning - and celebrates country music.
The festival in 2010 starts Thursday 7 October until Monday 11 October.
Redevelopment
In Late 2007 plans were announced for the hotel to be sold off and demolished - with plans to demolish the existing building and replace with flats, bar, restaurant, swimming pool and underground car park. However, in April 2008 it emerged that the property developer had become bankrupt and plans for the redevelopment were put on hold. Subsequently, whilst the hotel was still sold and due to be knocked down regular holiday makers were told that the hotel would close for business on the 1st November 2008.
Plans changed come April 2008 when it emerged the hotel sale had fallen through and would remain open throughout 2009 - although the hotel was closed from 1 November 2008 (when it was originally going to close for good) and reopened in February 2009. There was no New Year break that year, where the hotel would open for business from the 29th December through to the 2nd January.
Come December 2009 and the hotel is still open, with the hotel opening this New Year from 29 December - 2 January, offering families the opportunity to once again meet up and celebrate entering the year of 2010.
The hotel is confirmed to be open throughout the year of 2010 and also 2011.
