Best Western Moorside Grange stands on the site of Moorside Farm. Originally a dairy grazing farm at the beginning of the 20th century, belonging to Lord Newton of Lyme, which is now Lyme Park. It was sold in 1920. In the 1930s a group of local businessmen and friends rented fields form the then owners, Stockport Corporation Waterworks and created a full sized 9 hole golf course. Farm buildings were converted into a club house and storage rooms. The tenant farmer worked as grounds man and his wife catered for members and guests. At the outbreak of war, materials and members were hard to come by and the course went into decline. In the 1950’s the course was just about playable and under new ownership. It became the Moorside Country and Golf Club, the golf became almost non-existent and the club developed into a popular late night drinking club. The club was raided by the police in 1958 in connection with licensing contraventions and it is thought that this led to the eventual closure of the club. In the early 1960’s the property was bought by a local business man who developed the farmhouse into a bed and breakfast establishment with a reputation for good food. Over the years the B and B flourished and were expanded to encompass a restaurant and bar, situated in the original farm outbuildings. Demand from local people to hold weddings and dinner dances led to the building of the Pennine and Alpine Suites. The bed and breakfast had evolved into a more formal hotel with the focal point - the fine dining Courtyard Restaurant. In the late 1980’s, increased popularity resulted in the addition of further bedrooms, conference room and an extensive purpose built leisure complex, which is one of the premier facilities the area.
