The Pigeon (Canadian publication)

The Pigeon is a Canadian digital publication that publishes long-form features, including in-depth reporting, investigations, and personal pieces.
Background
The Pigeon was launched on 6 July 2020, by a group of Canadian student journalists and graduates. According to the publication's website, its founders "saw an opportunity to create positive change in the Canadian media landscape by bringing in-depth stories to our readers and giving new journalists the chance to learn what it’s like to pitch to a publication."
The Pigeon publishes content from both volunteer staff and contributors. In the interest of furthering equity in Canadian journalism, contributions from "Black journalists, Indigenous journalists, journalists of colour, and LGBTQ2S+ journalists" are prioritized.
Founding member Mackenzie Casalino told the Canadian Journalism Foundation in an interview that, "We’re all over Canada, we’re from various communities and various backgrounds We have what many newsrooms are striving for, and we’ve already accomplished that. That’s something that I really think we should be proud of and we should really emphasize in our publishing.”
Fundraising
The Pigeon's budget is raised solely through donations on its Patreon fundraising page, with specific funds for paying marginalized contributors and covering operating costs. Founding member and managing editor Tegwyn Hughes told the Canadian Journalism Foundation in an interview that readers can best support the publication through donations, saying, "If you have the ability to financially support it that will allow us to stop being a project and start being a publication."
