The New York International School is a selective independent, coeducational and non-denominational PreK - 5 school on the Upper East Side of New York City providing global education to American and international students aged 2 to 10 years old. The school is established by The British Schools Foundation and is part of its global network of 10 schools. The curriculum combines high academic standards with a dual language program in either Spanish or Chinese. It integrates the American curriculum and an international vision with the aim of enabling students to progress to top schools and universities in the US and anywhere in the world. Location and facilities The campus is located at 4 East 90th Street, in the Upper East Side. The building is a historic landmark building adjacent to Central Park and Fifth Avenue, in the area known as “The Museum Mile”. The school benefits from Central Park’s outdoor facilities and playgrounds, and has an indoor multi-purpose gym and a small outdoor playground. Governance The New York International School is governed by the British Schools Foundation, an independent UK non-profit organization which aims to promote quality international education worldwide. The British Schools Foundation (BSF) has a global network of schools across the world, in locations like Spain, China, Brazil, Russia, South-East Asia and the US. With an approximate enrollment of 4,000 students, BSF has a history of excellent academic results in an international setting. BSF schools are accredited by local educational authorities and affiliated and reviewed by several international councils and federations. Curriculum The curriculum is designed for American and international families in New York interested in providing a global education to their children. It combines a focus on high academic standards with a dual language program in either Spanish or Chinese. It integrates the American curriculum and an international vision with the aim of enabling students to progress to top schools and universities in the US and anywhere in the world. Global The curriculum results from BSF’s long experience providing international education to families around the world. Embedded within the curriculum is a view of the future that goes beyond national borders and extends across the world. An international vision is therefore infused within the curriculum to ensure that all subjects become global. The international vision is complemented by a language immersion in either Spanish or Chinese. The objective of the language immersion program is that students become bilingual by the time they graduate. The third element is the global network of schools, allowing NYIS students to develop cross-cultural experiences through exchanges between campuses in order to develop their own view of the world. Child-Centered Teaching and learning is aimed at making the most of children’s natural curiosity to learn and inquisitiveness. In Preschool, learning takes place principally through guided play. Children will typically find a range of activities from which to choose during their lessons. As work gradually becomes more structured in Lower School, lessons are planned with a view to making them interesting and engaging. Great emphasis is placed on creating a stimulating and caring environment in which students are happy and at ease and in which learning is fun and enjoyable. Personalized Teachers plan lessons with differentiated outcomes, allowing for a range of achievements. This enables teachers to match each lesson as closely as possible to individual needs whilst providing scope for students to be stretched academically. Each child’s progress is recorded and tracked individually and forms the basis for the planning of all lessons, ensuring students learn at a pace that adjusts to their needs. Rigorous Students who complete their elementary education at NYIS will attain a high level of competency across all subjects. In addition, and based on our belief in helping children develop a global perspective, they will acquire a command of a second language, Spanishor Mandarin Chinese. Learning is largely question-based, with an emphasis on problem solving, aiming to build up a pupil’s ability to reason and think independently. Although each subject has its own key objectives, teachers will often deliver these as part of a more thematic and cross-curricular approach.
