The May 2010 Puerto Rican earthquake occured on May 16 1:16 AM local time. Strong shaking was felt as far as Ponce, Puerto Rico. But strong-soft shaking was felt as far the British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic. The quake had a magnitude of 5.8 according to the United States Geological Survey, it may not seem like much, but according to witnesses,(including myself) the quake felt much stronger. Damage was reported in the western side of the island. Geologists warn that this quake may be a wake up call, stating that Puerto Rico is almost 300 years overdue for a mega thrust earthquake, and 100 years overdue for an earthquake in the Mona Island region. The island has always been an area of concern to Geologists. The Puerto Rico trench, where the North American plate sinks beneath the Caribbean plate, is able to produce an earthquake of magnitude 8.5+.
