The Lift at Juniper Street is a new generation of parking garage developed by Brandywine Realty Trust, one of the largest publicly traded (), full-service, integrated real-estate companies in the United States. This 220 car eco-friendly state of the art parking facility is the first fully automated public parking garage in the city of Philadelphia. In 1929, Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company proposed an automobile parking machine that heralded the future - “whisking” cars out of sight before returning them, economically and efficiently, to their respective owners. In time, and with the progression of technology, the idea made its way to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, where hundreds of thousands of cars are now stowed in automated garages. While automated parking has been popular in Europe for many years, it is only now catching on in the United States. Automated parking garages like The Lift provide parking in dense or constrained areas where traditional garages could not be built. These types of facilities are particularly advantageous in areas and for users that are land-constrained but growing, such as downtown urban core areas, medical and health care institutions, and colleges and universities. Automated parking garages like The Lift can reduce carbon emissions up to 83% over a conventional parking garage and emissions are up to 68% lower. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, The Lift substantially reduces exhaust emissions, gasoline usage, storm and polluted water run-off, making it an eco-friendly facility.
