The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation

Katie DeCubellis

On October 29 , 1999, thirteen year old Katie DeCubellis was killed in a car accident caused by an impaired driver. Her story and experience has left a huge impact on many individuals. Katie was a leader among her peers and served as a student athlete who people respected and admired. She had a passion for helping people and always put others first. Her story has helped people realize the dangerous affects of drinking and driving. To promote awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving the “Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation” was made in remembrance of her.
The Accident

What was supposed to be a trip to the mall ended in a tragic result for forty-four year old Marsha Bowman, her fourteen year old daughter Rebecca and thirteen year old Katie DeCubellis when a car suddenly struck the back of their vehicle. The car was sent across the highway resulting in the death of Katie DeCubellis and Marsha Bowman. Driving the other vehicle was Stephan Reise who had been driving under the influence of alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana. The impact of the crash resulted in Bowman’s car splitting in half, having Bowman’s side land more than 50 feet from where it was struck. Marsha Bowman and Katie DeCubellis were soon pronounced dead at the hospital, while Rebecca Bowman only suffered a broken jaw.
Foundation
The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation was set up to forever memorialize Katie DeCubellis and all that she had accomplished in her short, thirteen years, of life. Her legacy lives on “promoting youth leadership, supporting education, and generating public awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and substance abuse" (KDMF). The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation holds different activities, speakers and events.
The foundation encourages people to make videos on safe driving and decisions.
Katie was a great creative writer, she enjoyed writing poems for school which spirited her memorial foundation to promote creative writing assignments with a contest and cash prize to their winners.
Speakers for the foundation, mainly Katie’s parents John and Meg DeCubellis, visit different high schools and universities with the harsh truth of drunk driving.
The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation hosts races, golf tournaments and raises money for causes that Katie would have participated in, if it were not for her untimely death.
Some of the Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation sponsors are CVS Pharmacy, Tim Horton’s, Johnny Rockets, MADD and SADD, along with many others.
