The Gravedigger is a fictional character featured in a two-episode story arc of Fox drama show Bones. Background and development The Gravedigger is introduced in the ninth episode of season 2, Aliens in a Spaceship, as a kidnapper who stuns the victims with a modified stun gun and buries them alive inside a container with 24 hours of air. The Gravedigger then calls up someone close to the victim with a ransom demand. The Gravedigger's voice is modified. The Gravedigger is also known to run down unexpectedly appearing witnesses with a car, drugging them to remove their memory of the incident. Thomas Vega is an expert on the Gravedigger, having written a book on the subject, and he is also an FBI ransom expert. He always advises the relatives to pay the ransom. He is suspected by Seeley Booth to be the kidnapper himself in Aliens in a Spaceship, but is found dead in his car in The Hero in the Hold. The Gravedigger is revealed in the fourteenth episode of season 4, The Hero in the Hold, to be an FBI attorney named Heather Taffet. Taffet married a man named William Burton in order to rent a storage locker under a false and untraceable identity, so she could hide her equipment there. Taffet kills Vega, but is injured in the process, and makes sure that the squint team are off the case by detonating the evidence, making it look like the squints did it. However, they persuade Jared Booth to steal the body and they discover that the Gravedigger should have a broken rib. Taffet comes with a warrant to retrieve the body, but can't lift her arm. As such, the squints deduce that Taffet must be the Gravedigger. Victims * Four unknown surviving victims. * Matthew and Ryan Kent, discovered in a beer vat. Taffet intended to only take Matthew, but Ryan intervened and was run down. With the unintended second victim, air was used up twice as fast, unforeseen by Taffet. Ryan committed suicide by stabbing himself in the neck using a pen, to give Matthew a chance to survive. * and Jack Hodgins. In a case mirroring the kidnapping of the Kent boys, Taffet stuns Brennan and runs Hodgins down with her car, and buries them alive in a car in a quarry in Virginia. However, Hodgins manages to get a text message to Booth about their location which Zack deciphers, and they blow their way to freedom using the explosive charges in the airbags. * Seeley Booth. Booth was Taffet's last victim. However, she demands missing evidence from her kidnapping of Brennan and Hodgins, which Hodgins is revealed to have stolen. She detonates the evidence, but the squints, with some help from Jared, deduce that Booth must be at a condemned navy ship. Booth, in the meantime, escapes to the deck of the ship on his own, with some help from a (seemingly corporeal) ghost of his army friend, Teddy Parker. Brennan arrives by helicopter and Booth is rescued in the nick of time.
