The Five (comics)

The Five are a fictional collective of mutants appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Pepe Larraz, the group first appeared in Hickman's relaunch of the X-Men franchise House of X #5 (November 2019), although the individual members were first created as far back as 1979. During the storyline, mutants established their own sovereign nation on the sentient island of Krakoa headed by Charles Xavier and Magneto. Xavier brings the group, consisting of Egg, Elixir, Hope Summers, Proteus and Tempus, together after theorizing that this specific combination of mutants, each using their powers in concert with one another, could create life and thus, resurrect fallen mutants at will. Of the group, three members (Elixir, Proteus and Hope) are known Omega-Level Mutants.
Publication history
The Five were officially formed during House of X #5 which was released on September 18, 2019 though the individual members were all created much earlier. Egg was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Bachalo and debuted as "Goldballs" in Uncanny X-Men vol 3. #1 (April 2013). Elixir was created by Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir and Keron Grant and first appeared in New Mutants vol. 2 #5 (November 2003). Hope was created by Mike Carey and Chris Bachalo and first appeared in X-Men #205 (November 2007). Proteus was created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne and first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #125 (September 1979). Tempus was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen and first appeared in All-New X-Men #1 (January 2013).
Since their debut, the Five have been mentioned or had a significant role in all of Hickman's Dawn of X series including X-Men, Marauders, ', ', ' and '.
Members
*: Previously known by the codename "Goldballs", Egg has the ability to create and project golden egg-shaped objects from his body. It was later revealed by Xavier that these balls were, in fact, non-viable eggs.
*: An Omega-level mutant capable of controlling the biological structure of any organic matter. Although he most commonly uses this ability to heal others, Elixir's powers can also boost and restore mutant abilities, detect abnormalities in living beings, cure disease and cause pain.
*Hope Summers: The Omega-level adoptive daughter of Cable with the power to psychically manipulate and mimic the powers of other mutants. Hope's ability primarily manifests through mimicking the powers of those around her although she has also exhibited telepathic and telekinetic abilities and can "jump-start" newly emerging mutant powers.
*: The supervillain son of Moira MacTaggert who possesses a vast psionic ability to manipulate reality. He is a being of pure psionic energy which enables him to exhibit occasionally telepathic abilities and possess humans, which gives him access to all of their memories even after he has left their body. His reality warping powers allow him to transmute matter and bend the laws of physics.
*: A mutant who is able to create "time bubbles" which pause time for those outside of it or can transport its inhabitants into the past or future.
Role
In order to resurrect a deceased mutant, the Five must channel their powers together in a way that requires a great deal of focus and both physical and psychological strain although, with each successful resurrection, the process becomes easier. To begin, Egg produces a number of nonviable biological eggs equal to the number of mutants the Five are required to resurrect. The eggs are then injected with the DNA of the dead mutants, which is stored in Mister Sinister's genetic catalogue and made viable using Proteus' reality warping powers. Because Proteus' abilities demand a large amount of psionic energy, his body will tend to "burn out" in a week (or even in a single day following excessive use), meaning the Five always keep a backup replacement Proteus on hand to take over once the current one dies. Elixir then uses his biological manipulation abilities to give life to the eggs, kickstarting cell regeneration and growth. Finally, Tempus uses her powers to rapidly mature the bodies within the eggs to the exact age the mutants were when the died. Hope's role in the process is perhaps the most integral, as her mimicry abilities empower the other members of the Five, allowing their powers to operate at their peak and in unison with one another. Following this, Professor Xavier uses Cerebro to transfer the consciousness of the mutant into their new body. Once the process is complete, the mutant will be "reborn" with all of their skills, powers and memories.
Because the act of resurrection is such an intimate and intense process, the Five are noted to have become very close to one another and are rarely seen apart. On Krakoa, they are treated like celebrities and are both cherished and revered by other mutants for being integral to the survival of their species. Krakoa's Quiet Council sees the protection of the Five as their ultimate priority.
In order to avoid duplicates, the Five are not permitted to resurrect a mutant until their death can be confirmed. To help with this, an X-Factor team reporting directly to the Five lead by Northstar and consisting of Polaris, Prestige, Daken, Prodigy and Eye-Boy was formed with the purpose of investigating mutant missing persons.
