The Dene is a council estate in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north of Consett, near Medomsley. There are 150 houses on the estate, most of which are owned by Derwentside Homes. A recent refurbishment programme has seen the houses fitted with double glazing and gas central heating. Famous residents include the guy who played the saxophone solo on Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty and the England team mascot, Bulldog Billy. The very first Subbuteo world championship was held in the local community centre in 1969. The Dene is the only housing estate in Great Britain to have a surviving German Junkers Ju 188 bomber as it's centre piece. This remnant of the Second World War was shot down during a raid on the local steelworks at Consett. Despite several attempts to have it removed, the plane remains a tourist attraction to this day.
