The Byzantine Patriarchal See and Orthodox Church of Hungary is a relatively small but growing church of Eastern Christianity. Also known as the Holy Hungarian Byzantine Greek Church, it presently comprises several Exarchys and Eparchys worldwide, along with missions, a seminary (Saint John), Holy Orders, and Military Orders. The church is affiliated to the Orthodox Church of Hungary Erdely Carpathia. Brief history Although the official list of Patriarchs begins in 1866, the church claims its Apostolic rites were given to Hierotheos the Thesmothete, thought to be the first Hungarian Bishop, and also to the Gyula of Hungary at Constantinople in about the year 852 CE. Hungarian Orthodoxy struggled for survival through the Ottoman Wars, the triumph of Roman Catholicism in the country, both World Wars, and the Communist era. The present Patriarch of the church is Gyula IV, styled "Byzantine Patriarch of All Hungary, Imperial Patriarch of Czernowitz and Bukovina, and Patriarch of the West", the latter a title claimed at the end of 2006, when it was discarded by Pope Benedict XVI.
