The 400 Unit is an Americana band, and has served as the backing band for musician Jason Isbell since 2006. In addition to backing Isbell on studio albums and touring, The 400 Unit band members have enjoyed successful careers as session musicians, record producers, songwriters, and in solo projects. The band has also performed and recorded as the backing band for Bahamas, Josh Ritter, Zach Schmidt, Church of Roswell (Candi Carpenter and Josh Doyle), Morgan Wade, and 400 Unit guitarist Sadler Vaden's solo album 'Anybody Out There?'. History Members The current 400 Unit lineup includes: * Jimbo Hart, bass, backup vocals * Derry deBorja, keyboard, accordion, backup vocals - formerly of Son Volt * Chad Gamble, drums, backup vocals * Sadler Vaden, guitar, backup vocals Isbell named the band after a slang term for the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Album Credits The first iteration of The 400 Unit appeared on , released February 17, 2009, the second solo studio album by Jason Isbell after making his break from Drive-By Truckers. The album credits current members Hart and deBorja, as well as now-defunct members Browan Lollar (St Paul and the Broken Bones) on guitar and Matt Pence on drums. The 400 Unit's second studio album with Isbell, Here We Rest, released April 12, 2011, replaces Pence with drummer Chad Gamble of the Gamble Brothers Band, a family duo band with brother Al Gamble. Southeastern, released on June 11, 2013, saw the removal of Lollar on guitar. By the release of Something More Than Free on July 17, 2015, guitarist Sadler Vaden, formerly of , was added to form the current lineup. The Nashville Sound was the fifth studio album by Isbell to include The 400 Unit, and the third to credit the 400 Unit on the album cover. Isbell felt it was important to credit the full band on the album cover, thus making all members of the band eligible to attend awards, “I felt like the band really deserved that qualification on this album because I don’t think it would have been the same without their help, and I realized that about a week into the process of making the record."The Nashville Sound went on to win two Grammy Awards, including Best Americana Album, which was the first to be awarded to all band members. Reunions is Isbell's sixth studio album to be accompanied by The 400 Unit.
