The Thayne Center is a non-profit organization established in 1994 (originally named the Emma Lou Thayne Community Service Center) to coordinate a variety of service-related programs for Salt Lake Community College. Most of the money the organization obtains comes directly from the college, and 75% of all donations go back into the Thayne Center's cause. While there is one full-time director, all other employees are students. The group also works with AmeriCorps to coordinate reading/tutoring and literacy in elementary schools. Programs Alternative Spring Break Alternative Spring Break challenges students to serve with local and national programs during Spring Break. America Reads America Reads is a national campaign to help strengthen the reading ability of children from kindergarten to third grade. Service Learning Service Learning provides student with experiences through community partnerships and courses created to teach while the student volunteers for community service. Utah Service Symposium The Utah Service Symposium highlights art and literature from a variety of academic and non-profit sources. The symposium demonstrates a tie between art and service. Scholarships The Thayne Center established the Emma Lou Thayne Civically-Engaged Scholarship to recognize outstanding students at Salt Lake Community College who enhance their education through service initiatives and community involvement.
