Teresa Tapia

Teresa Tapia is one of boxing's first Latina American female managers. She was a Boxing Manager from 1995 until 2011.
Early life
Tapia was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, then moved to California at the age of 10. She returned to Albuquerque as a teenager. At age 19, Tapia met and soon married world championship boxer, age 24, Johnny Tapia in 1994. They had three sons over their 18-year marriage.
Early career
Tapia started her career in boxing as a manager in 1995. Her first client was her husband, Johnny Tapia. During that year, Teresa Tapia managed Johnny Tapia's fights against Jose Rafael Sosa, Ricardo Vargas, Arthur Johnson, and Jesse Miranda, the latter at in Las Vegas, Nevada. At that time, it was her husband's thirtieth win (0 losses, 2 draws).
Teresa Tapia's first involvement in Boxing Promotions was during an event assisting promoter in 2000. This was a fight between Johnny Tapia and Pedro Javier Torres at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces. Showtime Championship Boxing covered this event.
In 2002 Teresa Tapia faced her biggest defeat when her client was stripped of his International Boxing Federation featherweight championship because of a 60-day rule that they did not abide by.
Teresa Tapia continued managing Johnny Tapia and saw him through five more championship titles, including the IBF super flyweight (this title was held by another boxer, managed by the celebrity boxing manager Jackie Kallen). In 2013, Teresa signed Documentary rights over to hip hop artist and Movie Producer, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, and boxing promoter Lou DiBella, who became the documentary's executive producers and premiered it on HBO. The documentary also features Teresa Tapia and their children.
Later career
Tapia was the promoter for the Impact Network, which started a boxing programming in February 2020 that was headlined with former junior middleweight champion, Austin Trout, in a comeback against Rosbel Montoya.
As of April 2020, Tapia is working on two new TV channel networks set to premiere over the summer and promote featured events for them. One includes a partnership with Hall of Fame MMA fighter Diego Sanchez.
Tapia is also a brand as an ambassador for entrepreneurial women, a mentor for at-risk youth and adults, speaker, sports consultant, event coordinator, promoter, and movie executive. She is a Producer for TV series Stars and Champions and TV special Impact Boxing.
Recognition
Tapia is recognized as the first and only female boxing manager in the history of boxing to receive a Special Recognition Award from the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004. She was featured in in the 2005 print edition for receiving this award.
In 2017, Tapia stood in for her late husband at the International Boxing Hall of Fame five years after his death to accept his induction.
