Team Manipal Racing (TMR) is Manipal University's Official Off Road Racing Team started by a group of students in 2008.The idea is to conceptualize and design an all terrain vehicle and to compete with international counterparts at various events conducted by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). A team which can manage on its own and complete ATV design projects and self finance them, to start a legacy of such automotive R&D projects in the college which would put Manipal Institute of Technology on the national and global technical and automotive map. Cars V1(2008-2009)-The Beginning TMR designed and fabricated their first single-seater, All-Terrain Vehicle(ATV) in the year 2009. The specifications of the car were as per the rules laid by SAE Baja. The specifications of the car are as follows: * Single seated space frame chassis. * Material used - AISI 4130 . * Welding used - tungsten inert gas arc welding (TIG). * Special features : Roll stiffness, Ergonomics, Rider comfort and safety. * Front suspension - SLA (short long arm) with nitrogen filled coil over oil shocks. * Rear suspension - double wishbone suspension. * 4×2 drive with half-shaft transmission, CVT to attain infinite gear ratios. * Engine - BRIGGS AND STRATTON engine, 10 hp OHV Intek model. * Brakes - Single caliper, twin piston disk brakes, outward brakes on front wheels, and inboard braking on rear. * Front-rear braking system, tandem master cylinder. * Steering - Rack and pinion type steering system with turning radius of 10 feet. Special features of our car : # Off-terrain vehicle. # Chassis designed for optimum performance and driver comfort with safety concerns. # Suspension designed keeping in mind the terrain to provide best possible ride quality. # High performance Disc brakes employed to ensure efficient braking even under severe conditions like mud bogs, rock crawl, etc. # Most importantly, it’s a vehicle manufactured by students having first hand experience in manufacturing. V2 V2 was the second car made by the TMR . It was designed in the year 2010 to participate in SAE BAJA competition held in Rochester. The specifications of the car are as follows: * Single seated space frame chassis. * Material used - AISI 4130 . * Welding used - Tungsten Inert Gas arc welding (TIG). * Special features - Roll stiffness, Ergonomics, Rider comfort and safety, Boat shaped. * Front suspension - Short Long Arm (SLA) with nitrogen filled coil over oil shocks. * Rear suspension - Double A-arm suspension. * Self designed steering knuckles to suit our needs. * Transmission - 4×2 drive with half-shaft transmission. CVT to attain infinite Gear Ratios. Directional Gear box coupled with Chain Drive. * Engine - BRIGGS AND STRATTON engine, 10 hp OHV Intek model. * Brakes - Single Caliper, twin piston disk brakes, outward brakes on front wheels, and inboard braking on rear. With front-rear split braking system. * Master cylinder type - tandem master cylinder. * Steering - Rack and Pinion type steering system. Turning radius of 10 feet. Special Features # Off-terrain AMPHIBIOUS vehicle. # Chassis designed for optimum performance and driver comfort with safety concerns. # Suspension designed keeping in mind the terrain to provide best possible ride quality. # High performance Disc brakes employed to ensure efficient braking even under severe conditions like mud bogs, rock crawl, etc. # It’s a vehicle manufactured by students having first hand experience in manufacturing. # OPTIMISED FENDERS for propulsion. # Floats for amphibious characteristics. V3 V3 was made in the year 2012 to participate in SAE BAJA held in Winconsin. * Chassis material-4130 steel * Welding-TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) arc welding * Engine - BRIGGS AND STRATTON engine, 10 hp OHV Intek model. * Steering-rack and pinion assembly, turning radius of 9 ft * Master Cylinder-Tandem master cylinder * Brake calipers-dual hydraulic; (twin piston) * Front suspension - Short Long Arm (SLA) with nitrogen filled coil over oil shocks. * Rear suspension - Double A-arm suspension. Special Features * Hydraulic disc brakes were preferred over drum brakes * One of India’s lightest BAJA car through extensive use of advanced, lightweight materials. * Inclusion of an onboard speedometer * Limited Slip Differential (LSD) has drastically improved turning performance and stability V4 Specifications * Brake calipers-dual hydraulic; (twin piston) * Engine - BRIGGS AND STRATTON engine, 10 hp OHV Intek model. * Front suspension - Short Long Arm (SLA) with nitrogen filled coil over oil shocks. * Rear suspension - Double A-arm suspension. * SLA front suspension. Three-link rear suspension with passive toe-control. Fox Float™ air springs and dampers on all four corners. * CVT-Consists of a Polaris P-90 42” belt * Offers a ratio of 12:1, with a 2.8” travel per 360° of pinion rotation * Aluminium steering arms, thinner carbon fibre tie rods, lighter EN24 mounts, carbon fibre steering wheel Improvements #* Better layout, reducing the mounting space, creating a smaller rear end in the chassis. #* Lower center of gravity by mounting all components on the lowermost plane of the vehicle. #* Better selection of CVT springs and flyweights to ensure better tuning. #* Lighter assembly (by approximately 10%). #* Higher top speed due to optimization of gear ratio by better selection of parts.
