Tara Waters Lumpkin is a medical and environmental anthropologist. She has been employed in international aid work and is president of the non-profit Perception, which promotes perceptual, cultural and biological diversity through its global projects. She is also a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner using a naturalistic approach to healing based upon a process that helps clients access their animal instincts and inner-natures. Tara has a master's degree in Creative Writing, formerly worked as an environmental journalist, and continues to write poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. She has won a Maryland State Arts Council grant for her fiction and has published widely. Currently, she is at work on a creative non-fiction book about healing. In addition, she offers animal communication sessions for clients who wish to communicate with their pets or wild animals. And she offers tarot readings that use the card layout as a form of divination that allows both Tara and the client to work together to interpret the probable future. Tara spent over a year in Namibia, Africa, working with traditional healers and community members under the auspices of the Namibian Ministry of Health and the United Nations Children's Fund. During this time, she became particularly interested in the relationship between healing, humans, animals, and the environment. In addition, she has studied nature awareness, outdoor survival skills, nature philosophy, and healing with Tom Brown, Jr., founder of the Tracker School. Later she attended courses in shamanism at the Foundation for Shamanic Studies. Tara has worked in post-genocide Rwanda for the United States Agency for International Development aiding in the creation of an ethno-justice system. She then returned to Rwanda to work with genocide orphans on a photography project to help the children cope with the trauma they had experienced. The children's photographs have been exhibited worldwide. Currently she is the president of Perception, a non-profit with numerous global projects. Her training in Somatic Experiencing is with the Foundation for Human Enrichment. http://taralumpkin.com
