Taoist Medicine (TM) is a traditional approach to health based in attention to the soul and entire body system of life through in-depth self-cultivation. It studies Jing, Qi, Shen and fluid, flesh, consciousness comprehensively; it analyzes the triple causes, i.e. outer, inner and original cause as a whole to prevent and treat illnesses. TM and Traditional Chinese Medicine share the same origin. The contents and methods of TCM also exist in TM. Therefore TM remains an independent subject, however, handed down within the Taoism field. Over thousands of years, TM and TCM have been mingled and many contents of TM have been integrated into TCM. However the depth and extent of the two medical systems exhibit some fundamental differences. The experiences and research findings attained by Taoist doctors have been continuously transferred into TCM and enriched theories and methods of TCM. These two medical systems would co-exist and co-develop in a harmonious way. The basic theories of TCM (Ancient Medical Literature, Basic Theory of TCM, Diagnostics of TCM, theory of acupoints, Meridians, Acupuncture, Internal Medicine of TCM, Chinese herb Medicine, and Prescriptions of Chinese herb, etc.), as are the foundation of study. Systematic Taoist self-cultivation practices and training on theories of TM is the recommended preparation before learning them.
