T. Hayden Barnes is an American environmental and social justice activist, law student, and First Amendment advocate best known for being "administratively withdrawn" from Valdosta State University in 2007 for advocating alternatives to the construction of two parking garages with mandatory student fees. Barnes filled a civil rights lawsuit against Valdosta State University and the University System of Georgia Board of Regents in January 2008 in response to his de-facto expulsion. Partial summary judgement was awarded against defendants in 2010 which set new precedent for personal liability for administrators who violate student's due process rights.. The case is currently on appeal before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Barnes is being represented by First Amendment attorney Robert Corn-Revere and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. Barnes has appeared on Fox News Special Report with Bret Baier and appeared Fox Business Network's Stossel on November 10, 2010. Barnes has addressed journalism students at Georgia State University and appeared in a FIRE-produced documentary about the Valdosta State Controversy. Barnes currently attends University of Baltimore School of Law.
