Linux distro, called SYS, iniciated by Werner Landgraf

Characteristics

Origin and goal of this distro was the intention to make most rigorously possible a Linux system what everybody can install, use and administrate. On the same time, so long this is not disturbing that principal goal, it can and should also include all tools for advanced use.

The installation DVD contains a) the installation, which runs full-automatically, normally without any question or necessary action; b) a rescue system.

The version SYS 0.20 , released on 2008/03/14, consists on an install DVD of 4,4 GB , unpacked 16,7 GB , whose installation needs appr. 15 - 30 Min. , and of a rescue system with plenty recovery tools which starts within appr. 15 sec. The system includes Kernel 2.6.25-rc5 , glibc 2.7, gcc 4.2.3 and tools for all branches of qualified work, inclusive server.

History

For its own server, the initiator since '6/07 adapted, compiled and packed open-source programs inclusive the Linux kernel, and put them for download, together with some simple administration tools, however still without an install CD; this was called Monkeynet Linux. At the same time, installing other distros for friends and neighbours, he saw what - mostly simple - lacks of other distros caused problems for new users which often dumped after short time Linux. The initiator startet to mount SYS joining his continuously compiled packages with most easy installation and administration tools which avoid the observed problems for beginners. Part of this is, in opposite to live-CDs, to set up most fast and definitively a well-working Linux system (the earlier versions of the installer deleted even the existing system).

The project is still at the beginning. With the current version, is resolved a) a most simple instalation, inclusive set up an imediately working ADSL connection and b) a good quantity and quality of programs for beginners and for advanced users. The next and last step will be c) the elaboration of some more tools for a most simple administration.

Until now, the distro is mainly distributed manually by handing over install DVDs. Because the instalation is full-automatical and leads to an immediately working system, even beginners hands over or install successful SYS on the computers of next friends. From the mirrors were download appr. 500 copies.

The origin of the distro is in Guyana-Cayenne, where is also the biggest number of installations; besides of this in north Brazil and some in Germany.

Obs.: Currently, the initiator has only a very precary internet connection; thus the development site is only for reference, and for download updated packages, but downloads of the install DVD should be made exclusively from the mirrors (new version 0.20 will be there on 19/3/08).
