Symbolicks

Symbolicks was a short-lived product from a company in Minneapolis in the 1980s, designed to facilitate exchange of personal information in social settings. Very little is known about the history of these novelty items.

Description
The devices consist of a pin with a slider panel, into which interchangeable chips can be inserted. The chips are printed with iconic symbols that describe many common activities and interests, such as sailing, computers, television, Girl Scouts, animals (or dislike of animals, signified by a circle with a bar through it over a picture of a cat or dog), and many, many more.

Although the company appears to be long dead, Symbolicks can still be purchased at Ax-man Surplus in the Twin Cities, Minnesota (although in very limited supply, and all the good interest chips have been scavanged by canny Minneapolis hipsters).
