Conferences
The Business of Green Media
On January 24, 2008, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo played host to SustainCommWorld’s Green Media Show. The conference gave the members of the graphic arts department the opportunity to become acquainted with new technology and business practices that will inhibit companies to produce their product in a more sustainable way. The presentation included avenues for all types of media, from printers and publishers to educators and students.
There were presentations offered that included key concepts of making business sustainable, tracking the economic “footprint” of communication media, and pushing the government and major industries to include sustainable measures in their business plans. In order to reduce the pressure that the graphic communication industry puts on the environment, companies across the world will need to adopt new programs for energy use, as well as alternative production materials. Also, California’s Global Warming Solutions Act has put more pressure on printers to develop new ways to go about business and to be leaders of innovation throughout the world.
The goal of the conference was to provide a program filled with information regarding the challenges businesses encounter when implementing sustainable business practices and the easy steps that can be taken to enhance the environmentally friendly aspects of specific organizations. .
Graphic Communication Institute
The Graphic Communication Institute (GrCi) was established in July of 2001 on the university campus of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly faculty and industry experts work to train people in new technology to promote sustainable production facilities.

On October 1-2, 2008, SustainCommWorld will be hosting another conference in Boston, Massachusetts. The venue will be at the Marriott Copley Place hotel. On October 1, 2008, leaders of sustainability will be answering questions to groups of attendees. The experts will mingle and “speed network” with those interested in learning more about sustainable practices. Later on that night, attendees will also be able to participate in a meet and greet with companies from all over the world. These companies will be available to answer any questions or concerns regarding the greening of the media .
