Susman Godfrey L.L.P. is a trailblazing commercial litigation boutique with offices in Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle.
Steve Susman founded the firm in 1980. Lee Godfrey joined three years later. The two served as co-managing partners until Godfrey’s retirement in 2014.
Susman pioneered contingent-fee representation in complex commercial cases. It was a novel idea. The use of contingency fees in the early 1980s was limited largely to personal injury cases. But Susman believed that if a lawyer was not willing to risk her own money on a commercial case, it should not be filed. The firm thus began promoting the idea of contingency fees and other risk-sharing arrangements for handling commercial disputes long before the phrase “alternative fee arrangements” came into fashion.
Partly as a by-product of its entrepreneurial ethos, Susman Godfrey and Susman Godfrey lawyers have received numerous awards, attracted much recognition, won many cases, and achieved a 99 percent client satisfaction rate.
