Shan "Susie" Lu is an American data scientist, visualization developer, artist, and currently a senior Data Visualization Engineer at Netflix. She is known for her Viz Palette tool, which allows other data viz experts to choose appropriate color palettes. Education Lu double majored in Painting and Industrial & Systems Engineering. Simultaneously earning a B.S. in engineering and a B.F.A in art from the University of Washington in 2010. She used the same low-resolution thermal printer that most stores use, but recoded and designed it using JavaScript While the project was a concept design, it makes it clear that there is room for innovation in the design space. The design has been praised for the potential to make interactions (particularly in the healthcare space) less transactional. Lu has visualized data on numerous topics, including movies, flight delays, weather, and . Scott Murray featured Lu's work and interviewed her about her techniques as an appendix to his book, Interactive Data Visualization for the Web. With Elijah Meeks, Lu produced a tool for other data visualization professionals called Viz Palette, which helps people making JavaScript visualizations to pick appropriate colors. Lu has also developed tools to improve annotations for visualizations coded with D3.js. Beyond her data visualization and coding work, Lu is an artist and cartoonist. She has combined her two interests to create illustrations related to data visualization. Awards At graduation in 2010, Lu was nominated and awarded Deans Medals from both the Art and Industrial & Systems Engineering Colleges at the University of Washington.<ref name=":0" />
