Sunjay Kapur is the Chairman of Sono Koya Steering Systems Ltd., Flagship Company of USD 800 million Sona Group. Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd. is the largest manufacturer of automotive steering systems and driveline components for the passenger car market in India, and electronic power steering systems for off-highway vehicles North America. A technology leader in the electronic steering systems, Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd. is a public limited company listed on the National Stock Exchange in India. The Sona Group (Sona BLW Precision Forgings Limited and Sona BLW Praezisionsschmiede GMBH) is also the largest manufacturer of precision-forged gears in the world. Early life and background Sunjay Kapur was born in the USA. He is the son of Mrs. Rani Kapur and Late. Dr. Surinder Kapur. He has two younger sisters, Superna Motwane and Mandira Koirala. Sunjay completed his schooling from The Doon School; where he was the captain of Hyderabad House. He has represented his alma mater in swimming, water polo, tennis, and hockey. Sunjay did a postgraduate year at the Williston Northampton School in Massachusetts, USA. He graduated with a BBA degree from the University of Buckingham, UK. Sunjay has undertaken several coveted global business programs. He completed “Growth in the Family” program at the Indian School of Business and University of Pennsylvania (Wharton). He was a part of the class of 2006 of “The Birthing of Giants” at MIT, USA (a 3-year program conducted by the YEO, MIT and Inc. Magazine). Sunjay also successfully completed the Owner President Management at the prestigious Harvard Business School and is a Harvard Business School Alumni. Expanded description Sunjay is the member of the executive committee of the Automotive Component Manufacturers’ Association ACMA 2012, 2013, 2014,2015 and 2016. He is also the Chairman of the Sustainable Technology Development Committee, the advisory body of the ACMA whose key focus is the creation of a viable environment for green vehicles in India. Sunjay also holds a position in the Northern Region Council of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). The expansion of the Sona group into new areas of business takes up most of Sunjay’s time. In addition, he is also passionately engaged in developing a leadership pipeline within the organization, with a view to building an eco-system that encourages small entrepreneurs in growth. Marriage and children Sunjay married Nandita Mahtani (m1996, div 2003). He then married actress Karisma Kapoor (m. 2003; div 2016) and has one daughter (Samaira) and one son (Kiaan). Honours, decorations, awards, and distinctions Sunjay actively supports and encourages upcoming entrepreneurs across the country. It is this very passion that has made him the first (and so far only) Indian to be elected Global Chairman of The Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO - formerly known as YEO 2007-2008). This worldwide group comprises 10,000 members; employing 800,000 people with total sales of more than $102 billion. Sunjay has taken his zeal for encouraging entrepreneurs forward in an unusual way. With a view to fostering the entrepreneurial culture in the country, he partnered with CNBC to create Masterpreneur India, one-of-its-kind reality series on Indian television. Aired on CNBC Awaaz, it is widely touted as a groundbreaking initiative to identify, groom, and recognize potentially strong young organizations. Sunjay harbors a passion for sports, Polo being one of them. He is instrumental in reviving interest in Polo; taking the game outside the interest of the army and royalty and bringing it to the echelons of corporate India.
