Sujok Therapy

Sujok Therapy (Su-Jok) is a form of complementary medicine originated in South Korea in 1987 by the scientist and scholer Prof. Park Jae Woo.. In Korean language Su means hand and Jok means foot.
In Sujok therapy, the practitioner stimulates points that are located on the hand and foot in order to restore the body to a healthy state.
Theoretically, Sujok therapy was developed as a curing system by the use of reflex points on the hands and feet, Magnets, Needles, Light device, aromatic oils, gem stones and more.
Since initiated, the method has further developed and includes additional techniques and treatment modalities such as Six Ki as well as movement techniques such as Direction Therapy, Twist Therapy, Sam Won Dong, Smile Yoga and Smile meditation.
Sujok Therapy was vastly explored in Russia, it is permitted for use in the practice of physicians that studied Sujok reflexotherapy. The training of Sujok therapists are allowed only for medical doctors (MD) and is part of the state program for training reflexology physicians. Moscow Sujok Academy is a licensed non-state Institution of additional education.
However, in the west, not much is known about this method and PubMed search of Sujok research shows only 3 scientific studies regarding mostly asthma.
So far, there is no concrete scientific evidence that prove Sujok therapy to be effective method of Treatment.
Sujok concepts and theory
The essence of Sujok therapy are correspondence systems of the whole body that can be found on the hand and foot as well as on the ears, arms and legs, eyes and others. According to the founder of Sujok Therapy, Prof. Park Jae Woo: In his quest of enjoying a healthy and harmonious life, man has discovered and developed number of natural healing systems, the discovery of hand and feet correspondence cure systems occupy a very special place...especially, the hands are so similar to the human body in terms of shape and structure that even a slightest attention is sufficient enough to revel this similarity and come to a conclusion that such resemblance aims at prevention and cure of diseases for our good health.
Based on the theory that correspondence systems of the whole body exist on our hands and feet, Prof. Park Jae Woo has mapped the reflexion of the Chinese meridians on the hands and feet. This reflection of the actual meridians was named Byol meridians and his theory was tested and demonstrated as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in various manuscripts including books and scientific articles. Most of the research done to evaluate the efficiency and efficacy of the Sujok therapy was done in eastern European countries derived from the former USSR.
In 1987, Prof. Park Jae Woo has established the International Sujok Therapy Association that was renamed in 2010 to the International Sujok Association.
The International Sujok Association (ISA) is a world-wide non-profit organization whose aim is to spread Sujokall over the world. The Association operates free workshops and treatment camps as well as supervision of education and training of both basic and professional Sujok practitioners all over the world. The Association claims to be committed for maintaining both the highest standards of professional training and of the moral values that contribute to the well-being of society.
Su-Jok Ki
According to the ancient eastern philosophy, diseases in the body develop due to changes in the amount of electromagnetic energy flowing along the routes of the metaphysical energy systems of the body, known as the Meridians (in traditional Chinese medicine) or the Chakras (traditional Indian medicine) . According to the Sujok Ki The flow of this electromagnetic energy might be compared to a life-giving river. If there is too much water in it, it will flood the surrounding lands, resulting in the death of all living there. If the river dries up, everything around turns into a desert.
According to this theory, excessive amounts of "energy" flowing in one or another body part, or in an internal organ, will result in a stagnation of "energy". This creates the conditions in which acute inflammatory processes may appear and hyper- functional states may develop that in time exhaust the body’s organs and systems<ref name=":14" /><ref name=":6" />.
According to this philosophy, "energy" deficiency causes impairment of metabolic processes in surrounding tissues. It decreases the functional activity of internal organs and systems and leads to the development of chronic disorders characterized by insufficient blood circulation. It leads also to the overgrowth of dense connective tissue and to the formation of stones<ref name=":14" /><ref name=":6" />.
