Strategic and Tactical Planning of Corporate Facilities

Overview

Strategic and Tactical Planning of Corporate Facilities is a forthcoming book by architect Tom McCune, AIA, about planning techniques applicable to large buildings and campuses for major corporations and institutions.

Design versus Facility Planning

Traditional approaches to the architectural design of buildings emphasize a one-time process to lay out internal rooms and coordinate these rooms with the exterior form of the building and the necessary structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. The design process progresses through the phases of schematic design and design development and ultimately results in the production of a set of "construction documents" (blueprints).

Facility planning focuses on the issues driving:

*The demand for space over time

*The supply of space

*Location of the facilities

*Duration of time the facility will be held

*Migration sequence of moving into and out of the facility

*Organizational branding issues affected by the facilities

Strategic and Tactical Planning... presents a step-by-step method for collecting information about these issues and generating plans that are useful as the basis for beginning design of new buildings or planning the evolution of existing buildings.
