Stop hitting yourself

"Stop hitting yourself" (alternatively "Why are you hitting yourself"?) is an English language phrase commonly used by an aggressor to humiliate or physically harm a victim. The aggressor is typically stronger than the victim, and so is able to manipulate the victim's arm or hand, moving it such that it is used to strike the victim, often in the face. Each successful strike is usually accompanied by the aggressor pleading the victim to stop such behaviour. The aim is to cause frustration, as the victim is unable to prevent his own hand from striking himself.
The tactic may be used by a bully to inflict serious pain and humiliation on his victim. Alternatively, it may be used by a friend or relative of the victim. In the latter case, both parties may find the activity humorous, and the the perpetrator will typically ensure that no serious harm is caused.
