History StillStream is an Internet radio station that focuses on Ambient music. It plays music from all beatless subgenres of ambient music. StillStream began broadcasting on March 1, 2005 and its listening audience has grown continuously ever since, through word of mouth. As of November, 2008, StillStream is in the top three stations by listenership amongst net radio stations that play primarily beatless ambient music (excluding those focused on chillout or downtempo genres). As of November, 2008, StillStream is also listed in the top eight matches for searches for "ambient radio" on more than one major search engine, including the number one spot on the Google search engine. StillStream has also been listed as one of the ambient stations in the iTunes music services since early 2008.
StillStream is notable for being one of the few major radio stations that is Non-commercial. It runs no advertising and solicits no monetary donations from listeners or artists (although it does accept in-kind donations, such as hosting or volunteer assistance). The station is privately funded and has essentially no revenue.
Music Licensing StillStream is notable for its non-commercial approach to net radio. Unlike most other popular stations, StillStream does not pay royalties to any Performance rights organisation for the right to play music on its stream. Instead, StillStream engages in direct licensing with music rightsholders, and documents rights either through the Creative Commons license or through a direct licensing agreement signed by the rightsholder. This enables StillStream to comply fully with US copyright law and simultaneously have access to a vast library of music by so-called independent artists that typically are not heard on major radio stations.
