Steven Cutts

Steven Cutts is an American film and stage actor best known for his role in the feature film Camp and his appearance in the Broadway company of the musical Hairspray.
Life and Career
Cutts was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, the son of Joan (née Washington), a one-time social worker and childcare giver, and Stephen Cutts an electrical engineer and lounge club singer. After graduating Parkway South High School, he went on to study acting a the Boston Conservatory.
While on break from classes Cutts traveled to New York City garnering favorable attention from major casting agents at open-call auditions. Shortly there after he was cast by director Rob Marshall in the New York workshops of the Broadway bound musical Hairspray in 2000.
After a decision to leave school to pursue professional endeavors, in 2002 he landed a role opposite Anthony Rapp (of RENT fame) in a darker musical work entitled Mister. In the show he portrayed a star student who’s troubled up-bringing lead to his untimely death leaving his teacher (Rapp) implied. Mister premiered at The Present Company Theatorium in New York’s Alphabet City.
Returning to New York in 2003 after a short break to be with family, Cutts secured the supporting role of Shaun in the movie Camp along-side Anna Kendrick, Robin de Jesus, and Sasha Allen. Produced by Danny DeVito’s Jersey Films and directed by Todd Graff, the movie earned large cult success in the U.S. and abroad where it opened as the #2 debut in it’s opening weekend in the U.K.
Cutts eventually joined Hairspray In May 2004 after being cast by Mitchell in the Orginal Canadian company of this production. The show opened at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. The run was short lived closing later that year. He joined the U.S. 1st National touring company in 2005 which ended its run in June of 2006. This company played notable theater houses that included Miami's Jackie Gleason, Los Angeles Pantages, St. Louis' Fox, and the Boston Opera House. Cutts joined actors Aaron Tveit, Caissie Levy, and Jim J. Bullock in Boston where they received a favorable reviews from noted theatre critic Michael Portantiere.
In 2007 Cutts joined the Tony Award winning Broadway company of Hairspray after being cast by Mitchell. He joined actors Jenifer Lewis, George Wendt, Darlene Love, Naturi Naughton, Alexa Vega, Marissa Jaret Winokur and Harvey Fierstein for the show’s final performances on Broadway. In September 2007 he performed with this cast as Seaweed in Marc Shaiman’s contribution on Barack on Broadway for President Barack Obama. On the west coast he has appeared in plays and been part of development on several film and television projects. In 2008, Cutts co-founded the charitable organization Broadway in South Africa (also called BSA). BSA is geared toward aid and arts education to benefit underprivileged youth who reside in townships and orphanages through out South Africa.
