Steve King cantaloupe calves comment controversy

Rep. Steve King made controversial statements involving immigrates and drug smuggling. On the 18th of July he stated:
For everyone who’s a valedictorian, there’s another hundred out there who weigh a hundred and thirty pounds—and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling seventy-five pounds of marijuana across the desert. Those people would be legalized with the same act.
These were comments he continued to defend during the following days. In an interview with the Washington Post, he stated:
“We have people that are mules, that are drug mules, that are hauling drugs across the border and you can tell by their physical characteristics what they’ve been doing for months.”
House Speaker John A. Boehner condemned the comments as“deeply offensive”. He stated that, “What he said does not reflect the values of the American people or the Republican Party.” These comments follow a long pattern of controversial statements by King, including one comparing immigrants to bird dogs. Many analysis see this is a problem for the Republican party as they seek to pass immigration reform and expand their voter base among hispanics.
