Stephenville Mall

The Stephenville Mall, also commonly known as Stephenville Plaza, is a shopping centre located in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador. The mall is located at the intersection of Main Street and Queen Street. The mall, along with the downtown shopping district, serves as one of the primary shopping destination for residents of Bay St. George. The mall is widely considered the secondary mall of Newfoundland's west coast, after the larger and busier Corner Brook Plaza, located about 80 km north in Corner Brook.
Location
The Stephenville Mall is located at 42 Queen Street, Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador. The mall is bounded by Queen Street on the west side, which features its main entrances and parking area, Main Street on the north with a primary parking lot entrance and auxiliary parking area, and Campbell Avenue on the East with a secondary parking lot as well as the primary entrance to the Holiday Inn Hotel and Convention Centre.
The mall is accessible from the Trans-Canada Highway via Route 460 and Route 490. Visitors can follow Route 460 in from the east, then follow Minnesota Drive from Noel's Pond to the intersection with Queen Street. Visitors from the west are more likely to follow Route 490 from the TCH. Using this route, visitors can use either Carolina Avenue/Main Street or Minnesota Drive/Queen Street to reach the mall and downtown areas. Visitors from the Port au Port Peninsula, also west, can follow a branch of Route 460, known as "The French Ancestors Route" into Stephenville, then follow West Street until its intersection with Queen near the Stephenville International Airport.
History
Construction began in 1974 and the mall opened in 1975. It was anchored by Sobeys and . In the mid-1980s, Woolworth's was converted to the company's discount retailer Woolco, while Sobey's converted its store to a Lofood outlet, and eventually a Price Chopper store in 2003 (it closed down in the summer of 2012).
With Wal-Mart's purchase of Woolco stores in 1994, the Stephenville Mall became the site of the first Wal-Mart in western Newfoundland. The Stephenville Mall Wal-Mart remained the company's only outlet on the west coast of the island until 2001 when Wal-Mart opened a stand alone store in Corner Brook. The Stephenville Mall and its Wal-Mart still attract shoppers from the Corner Brook and Humber Valley area due to the smaller size of the store and more select product offerings.

Community
The Stephenville Mall plays an integral role in its community. Originally designed strictly for shopping the mall has become a centre of community promotion and support. During the holiday season the mall becomes a popular location for various fundraising events for non-profit roups such as the Society for the Care and Protection of Animals (SCAPA), the Stephenville-Kippens-Port au Port Search and Rescue Team, Stephenville Minor Hockey Association, Salvation Army, and Canadian Cancer Society/Relay for Life.
During the summer, the mall often offers space to groups such as the Bay St. George Historical Society to display the region's heritage, and groups promoting special events such as the Stephenville Come Home Year in 2007.
During Stephenville Winter Carnival, the mall typically becomes a centerpiece for various events such as bake sales and promotions by community groups. Community groups also make use of mall space throughout the year to promote their causes. Junior sports groups such as Stephenville Minor Hockey, Minor Soccer and Minor Baseball typically conduct registration at the mall as well. These groups find there is a benefit to promoting themselves to the general public by making themselves available to the largest number of people possible, by setting up in the mall.
