Large, globally distributed organizations acquired multiple provisioning frameworks to handle the process of pushing patches to various silos of their infrastructure (primarily desktops and servers), but still struggled to ensure systems and applications were patched properly in acceptable timeframes. Organizations couldn’t put all their trust in the provisioning applications themselves, scripting didn’t scale, and deploying more agents to check on other agents wasn’t a feasible plan. STEALTHbits Technologies, as a newly founded organization with a technology platform of their own looking for a business problem to solve, designed a solution to alleviate the headaches associated with patch management. As the first preconfigured solution within the StealthAUDIT Management Platform, STEALTHbits designed a methodology by which to first agent-lessly discover systems attached to the network and compare them with what the provisioning frameworks listed in their inventory databases. After newly discovered machines were provisioned with the appropriate agents, StealthAUDIT would perform a deeper scan against all systems to ensure the agents were installed, configured properly, and ready to receive patch distributions. Finally, after the patches were deployed, StealthAUDIT would immediately follow behind with a Registry and File Level scan, ensuring Registry and file definitions were updated and the machines had been rebooted if necessary. The solution allowed organizations with hundreds of thousands of desktop systems and tens of thousands of servers to validate their patch deployments in hours and days, rather than weeks and months, saving time and cost, increasing security, and reducing risk. As StealthAUDIT grew to eventually exhaust the amount of information that could be gathered from the Windows Operating System, STEALTHbits expanded StealthAUDIT’s data collection capabilities to cover the entire Microsoft infrastructure, from Active Directory to Exchange, SharePoint, File Systems, SQL, IIS, and Mobility technologies like ActiveSync and BlackBerry Enterprise Server. STEALTHbits also added the ability to reach into cross-platform technologies like UNIX and Linux Operating Systems and File Shares, ODBC compliant database repositories, and various NAS and SAN storage platforms from vendors like NetApp and EMC. Advanced Data Analysis, Remediation, and Reporting facilities allow users to work with large datasets easily, fix problems they’ve identified, and represent data in meaningful ways to various audiences within an organization.
