Varonis

Varonis Systems, is a privately-held data security software company headquartered in the United States. Varonis produces software to help organizations manage and control access to unstructured and semi-structured data repositories, including file servers, NAS, SharePoint, UNIX, and e-mail. Varonis software runs on Microsoft Windows and Microsoft SQL, and employs a distributed collection mechanism to ensure that monitoring is as non-intrusive as possible.

Varonis claims to have over 1400 customers globally, including many in the financial services, government, healthcare, and retail industries.

History
Varonis Systems was founded in early 2005 by networking and storage experts Yaki Faitelson and Ohad Korkus after spending years in the development, design and implementation of large scale networking and data management infrastructures for NetVision and NetApp. The duo realized that the processes for monitoring who has access to sensitive data, finding non-IT data owners and managing and controlling access to unstructured data were fundamentally flawed since they were highly manual, resource intensive, and rarely successful.
Varonis's investors include Accel Partners, Evergreen Venture Partners, and Pitango Venture Capital.

Focus
Most organizations have valuable information on file shares, intranets, and in e-mail stores such as Microsoft Exchange that too many people have access to, and where access activity isn’t audited. This not only puts data at risk, but also makes data very difficult to manage— data owners are difficult to find, access controls are difficult to analyze and optimize, and authorization processes are manual and error prone.

Varonis helps organizations manage and protect unstructured data through metadata framework technology. By collecting and analyzing permissions, user/group, actual access activity, and content metadata, Varonis software helps organizations optimize authorization, audit use, and alert on potential abuse.

Varonis currently offers seven products that present data in two interfaces: DatAdvantage and DataPrivilege. DatAdvantage is typically used by IT staff, and DataPrivilege is generally used by data owners and end users to automate entitlement reviews and authorization workflow.
Data Governance
Varonis software provides unstructured data governance by helping to identify and involve data owners as well as automatically identify where users have excessive access. By ensuring that data is only accessible to those who need it, varonis helps prevent against data misuse and social engineering attacks.
Analytics
Varonis software keeps a continuous baseline of user behavior on unstructured data stores and provides analytics that can alert when activity spikes. This type of data analysis may be used as a form of automated misuse detection.
Technology
Varonis technology is built upon a software framework designed to facilitate the collection, processing, analysis and presentation of metadata. Specifically, Varonis gathers four types of metadata:

* File system information, including ACL permissions
* Users and groups from directory services and local server accounts
* Access activity, including file system, Exchange mailbox, and SharePoint site auditing
* Data sensitivity and classification information

Varonis software is designed to monitor and help govern access to unstructured data, including identifying and involving non-IT data owners. The underlying framework is presented through interfaces contained within the company's software products, including DatAdvantage and DataPrivilege. Varonis believe understanding how access control exists, is granted and is used is critical to ensuring that only the right people have access to the right sets of data, and that answering basic questions about unstructured data security is impossible without the right intelligence and automation. Gartner has cited Varonis as one vendor providing Big Data analytics to information security.
In June 2012, Varonis announced DatAnywhere, a product design to provide cloud-like remote file syncing of file share data to remote devices.
