State of the World 2009: Into a Warming World

State of the World 2009: Into a Warming World is part of Worldwatch's State of the World series of books, to be published in January 2009. The book is intended to "inject new inspiration and energy into national and international climate negotiations by conveying the profound, long-term consequences of the experiment we are now conducting on the Earth's atmosphere, with an emphasis on the human and ecological effects of that transformation". The book will also examine the public policy changes needed to tackle climate change and will explore benefits to the economy that could flow from the transition, including the creation of new industries and jobs in rich and poor countries alike.

Worldwatch's flagship publication, State of the World, has been published in 36 languages, and over the years it has assessed a wide range of issues, from population, energy, and agriculture, to materials use, health, and trade policy. The books are recognized as authoritative environmental literature, which have attracted luminaries such as Kofi Annan and Mikhail Gorbachev to write forewords for the series.
