Stanley Gibbs

Stanley Samuel Ployart Gibbs was born, Worcester, Massachusetts Feb. 12, 1891. He began his work at Springfield Armory during World War I - April, 1916 in an unknown capacity. He was promoted there to small arms inspector in the early 1930s. The exact date is unknown. He later becoming the Manufacturing Inspection Foreman in October, 1940. As such, he was issued his own stamp, which appears on special M1903 and M1903A1 rifles (NM, target demos, and presentation rifles) as well as on all the early "gas trap" type M1 Garand Rifles. His mark will also appear frequently on rifles rebuilt and inspected at Springfield Armory during his tenure. He ended his career at Springfield serving as Chief Inspector during the brief period between December 1947 and July 1950, when Col. James L. Guidon took command of Springfield Armory, later retiring on December 31, 1951. He died March 10, 1980. Unusually for an inspector and administrator with such varied responsibilities, Gibbs was blind in one eye and never served in the military.
