Stacie L. Hays is an Irish-American author living in Salisbury, Maryland. She has written over 15 short stories, including Rogue, Ocean City Summers, The American and The Geisha, The Marine's Wife, and My Childhood Friend.
Early life Hays was born in Milford, Delaware, on December 27th, 1984, to Denis and Sheri Hays. At the age of two, her family relocated to her mother's hometown of Assawoman, Virginia, where Hays would spend her formative years climbing trees and fishing. She attended North Accomack Elementary School (which is now Kegotank Elementary) and took part in a program for gifted scholars. Hays excelled in creative writing from the get go, and would often lose herself in the imaginary worlds she created. "I was cursed with an incredibly vivid imagination" an older Hays has joked about herself.
At the age of twelve, Hays and her mother moved to Salisbury, Maryland. She attended James M. Bennett Middle and High Schools, where she took part in Destination Imagination, Drama, Theater, Choir, Art, and Environmental Science clubs. She acted in class plays, often filling in at the last minute. After High School, Hays planned on attending school at Boston College, but her plans changed when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Shortly thereafter, her maternal grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and her maternal grandmother passed away. Hays worked a few odd jobs, but never found one that fit. "I always knew I wanted to write, and that was the only thing that was going to make me happy."
Career Hays's first story, The Marine's Wife was met with a positive reaction. She also gained a small but very loyal following over the internet due to a short lived column on the humor site, Points In Case, which is geared toward college aged individuals. After leaving PIC, Hays maintained a blog called Rage Against Stupidity, which has been called by many critics "funny... but scary". The blog mainly deals with frustrations faced by all individuals on a daily basis, but often laden with a heavy dose of sarcasm. Her second story, Ocean City Summers is said to be a true story, but that claim has never been confirmed or negated by Hays.
Reception Throughout her short career, Hays has been assaulted by criticism from every corner of the internet. She's been called "An angry, undersexed kid who knows nothing about life" on her blog's message board and "a cheap internet knock off of V.C. Andrews" after the release of her story My Childhood Friend. Her short story, Rouge was dubbed "The back woods version of Jaws, but less interesting." Hays always responds to criticism the same way, with a smile and a wave. "I'm doing what I love. You know what they say... Those who can, do. Those who can't, become critics." Her most recent short story, The American and The Geisha is the subject of the most backlash yet, with claims of plagiarism at the forefront. Hays has issued only one statement about the backlash, commenting "I read what people have to say about it, and I laugh. Sometimes I wonder if they even read it, or if they just want something to b**** about. I think a lot of people dislike the fact that I'm a strictly internet phenomenon. They think that makes me less reputable. It also gives them anonymity... When they're sitting up in their parents basement writing their scathing reviews, I guess. The funny thing is, they think they bother me. You have to have thick skin if you're going to market yourself online."
Personal life Hays is not married, and has no plans to any time soon. She also has no children. Rumors have been flying around, linking her to several men, but with nothing confirmed.
