The Southgate Civic Center is a recreational center located in Southgate, Michigan. People of all ages are welcomed to use the arenas for varieties of different activities. The Civic Center was built in 1992, and has been renovated throughout the years. Sports With two ice arenas, various types of Hockey and Figure Skating events are held there. Open Skating includes Drop In Hockey Stick Handling. Skating lessons include Tot Skate and Basic Skills. Teams can rent out the ice rinks for practice and games. The Pro Shop is the store located inside the Civic Center. This store is especially for Hockey and Figure Skating, providing things like sticks, skate stoppers, stick tape, and much more. The entrance of the Civic Center displays the accomplishments of the teams that have used The Civic Center. The Civic Center has two concession stands and a room especially for vending machines. Events Southgate Heritage Days is held at the Civic Center every year. Heritage Days usually take place around Memorial Day. Southgate citizens use the Civic Center to prepare for the parade. The parking lot acts as the location for all of the rides and concession stands. Food and music are usually inside the actual building. Businesses can rent out booths to advertise their products. Some of those businesses include Jets Pizza, Sunrise Yoga, National City Corp., and many more. Multiple bands are selected to play throughout the weekend. Southgate's Figure Skating competitions are held at the Civic Center in which girls between the ages of 5-18 years old perform in the show. Senior Citizen homes in Southgate hold parties in the loft room for most holidays. Southgate's middle school, Davidson uses the banquet hall to throw dances every couple Fridays. Halls The Civic Center has two halls. The Banquet Hall and The Loft. The Banquet Hall is located on the first floor, holding 175 people maximum. The loft is located on the second floor and caps off at about 70 people. The Loft is the newer addition of the halls. The Banquet hall divides into two rooms, including a bar along with small stage. The halls are used for special occasions, dance rehearsals, and business meetings. Graduation parties are the majority of the events held in the halls, and booking a grad party can get quite complicated. Renovation In 2007, the Civic Center added on a brand new ice rink. The rink holds twice as many people as the old rink. New concession stands were built along with the rink, and an elevator to get to The Loft. The locker rooms of the old ice arena were touched up and a new parking lot was built to accommodate the new rink. Citizens of Southgate are saying there is a possibility for a third ice rink to be built in the near future.
