The South Devon Players Theatre & Film Company was founded in 2016, by four local actors struggling to find roles, on the proceeds of a car-boot sale. The team is known for researching history and mythology, primarily from the Southwest of England, and adapting it into new theatre or film productions, providing local performers with a showcase, and training. Starting with the historical tale of a local writer and vicar, John Prince, and exploring much other local history, as well as wider classics including the Great Gale of Brixham in 1866 which was the cause of Brixham gaining her first lifeboat, other dramas have included a non-musical stage production of Les Miserables; the story of a local smuggler, "Resurrection" Bob Elliott, who faked his own death to transport contraband; and the highwayman Thomas Sympson, known as Old Mobb who operated in Hampshire and Devon in a show "Gentleman of the Road", and local links to the as a show "Survivors of the Titanic". The company was showcased at a film convention alongside stars from Game of Thrones. Their recent film about Mordred has gained the team international recognition in LA and New York for this adaptation of the 6th century tale of King Arthur's illegitimate son.
