Sott

Sott is a new sport, gaining popularity in St. George, Utah. Sott was recently created at Dixie State College by students out of a combination of necessity and boredom, and the new sport is a hybrid sport (a sport made from two sports combined). The two sports in this case are volleyball and tennis.

History

Sott was made up by junior Dillon Manwaring, a visual technology major from St. George, and his friends when they were going to play sand volleyball one night last summer. He said all the courts were being used, so they went to a tennis court and started playing with some made up rules, and from there sott was born.

Originally, "sott" had no meaning, but the name has now been turned into an acronym, standing for "something other than tennis".

An avid player of the new sport said, “It’s cool because anybody can play it. It doesn’t take a certain type of person to play; it’s for everyone.”

Another avid player of sott said despite the game’s intensity, it doesn’t require any special skills.
Another player said, "It’s the most intense sport I’ve ever played. Everyone can play it, and you don’t have to be way good."
Manwaring said the game has always had a fair number of students coming out to play, especially last summer when the weather was nice and the school year had just begun.
"When school first started I counted over 60 people playing one night on four different courts," he said. "I think that will probably happen again now that the weather is getting warmer."

Rules

* One starts by serving behind the serving line, like in tennis.
* It doesn’t matter if it’s served overhand or underhand, but the ball has to bounce before every hit back and forth.
* Players can pass it to other teammates and hit it three times before it has to go back to the opposing team, just like in volleyball, but the ball still has to bounce before each teammate hits it.
* Players are allowed to reach over the net because it’s so low and because of this, they can do power hits.
* Each team can have from four to nine players, and each team must have the same number of players.
