SoThin is an IT software company which develops, manufactures and retails Windows based software for thin clients. History SoThin Ltd was founded by James Dempsey and Andrew Rockingham and was subsequently incorporated as a private limited company in December 2001 to sell the ever growing SoThin suite (initially SoThin client). SoThin Thin Client was the very first software product to turn a Windows PC into an intelligent dumb terminal thin client. Subsequent terms for such devices are hybrid, slim terms and soft dumb terminals. In September 2009 SoThin were short-listed as a finalist in the information security product of the year category in that year's BCS and Computing UK IT Industry Awards. In January 2010, SoThin were announced as finalists in the PCR awards. Later, In March, SoThin were nominated in the Green IT Awards 2010. In July 2010, SoThin's SoThinPackage received a 5 star rating in a PC Pro magazine software review. Later, in August, SoThin were announced as finalists in the PC Pro editorial and reader-voted Reliability and Service Awards, in direct competition with Google, Intel, Samsung, VMWare and AMD, for environmental innovators. In October, creators of Norton Ghost, Binary Research International announced that it will be the exclusive distributor (outside the UK) of SoThin software, whilst Interactive Ideas will look after distribution in the UK. Overview SoThin supplies its software thin clients and desktop management products to Multinational, Public sector and Private sector organisations. Although currently the company's main target markets are SMEs its software is scalable and can be used for medium to large organisations. Products Thin Client is an application designed to replace the Windows shell with the SoThin Connection Manager on Windows PCs and Laptops. It essentially turns these devices into thin clients. The SoThin Connection Manager allows users to add local programs, Microsoft RDP/RDC, Citrix, Virtual Servers/Desktops and Tarantella connections as well as custom connections. Secure Desktop is a Windows shell replacement tool which converts Windows based PCs and Laptops into locked down devices which will only allow access to white listed applications and drives. Remote Control allows users to support all of their devices using the SoThin Remote Control Manager. This means device issues and user training can be carried out remotely. XyZ is a Windows replacement tool which converts Windows based PCs and Laptops into locked down devices which will only allow access to a single application. It can be utilised for Point of Sale (POS) and information kiosks. Desktop Recovery automatically copies, replicates and backs up all files and folders to ensure users can retrieve their desktop, applications and data in disaster recovery situations. ThinPackage is a downloadable tool which allows any remote user to access their corporate network or stand alone PC from any location. It includes 128-bit encryption and Windows authentication and is compatible with all Windows versions, prevents unauthorised access to local and network drives, and contains the option to allow the use of local drives, printers and sound on the remote computer.
